It’s hard to believe, but China’s birth rate is still lower than its abortion rate.
You may have heard that there are 13,000,000* abortions per year. This is an unbelievably high number, and an unnecessary waste of life. We must let our hearts break.
But this estimate of 13,000,000 does not include at least 10,000,000 abortions done at China’s many unregistered clinics, and illegal chemical abortions done at home.
If these estimates from Chinese government officials are accurate, that means that China has at least 23,000,000 abortions per year. That is 63,013 abortions a day, 2625 abortions an hour, 43 per minute.

In 2016, there were approximately 17.86 million births registered in China. This is higher than in previous years, and is credited to the change in China’s Family Planning Policy, which now allows 2 children per married couple. But another reason the birth rate increased in 2016 is that some children born illegally before 2016 can now be registered with less fear of legal penalties.
In China, fewer children are born than killed before birth. These numbers represent a deep lack of hope about the future in Chinese society. With so few children, it means there are fewer playgrounds, and fewer chances for love and joy, and fewer reasons for men and women to care about China’s future.
*Note: This number has been used as a rough estimate since at least 2009. Our research team has not been able to find reliable recent estimates, and it seems that the government has not publicly updated its figure of 13,000,000 abortions per year since 2009.)
